Blue is the most universally flattering colour. It's positioned between red and yellow on the colour wheel, so it balances both cool and warm skin tones. And thanks to the denim-obsessed '90s, blue is on the brink of becoming a neutral – think black, white, beige, grey and of course, millennial pink. Blue is calming, cool and serene, and the fashion world is as captivated as we are.
Fashion and blue go way back. In the mid-20th century, French artist Yves Klein mixed a hue called International Klein Blue (IKB or YKB), which he had patented in 1960. The deep shade of ultramarine blue, revered for the spiritual element of its pigment, was created by grinding the semi-precious stone lapis lazuli. IKB continues to be referenced throughout fashion weeks, most recently for Céline SS17.
The blue enchanting the catwalks this season is a dustier, softer shade, as seen in Off-White's Princess Di-inspired powder blue skirt suit, Versace's blue-hued looks from its SS18 tribute to Gianni Versace, and Richard Malone’s almost entirely blue SS18 collection. How to wear it? Team with other pastel hues like lilac and limoncello yellow, or go head-to-toe for real impact.
