It can be tempting to fish out the same trusty bobble hat every winter, but the drop in temperature is also a chance to try a bolder headpiece – a whole new look! The right hat can give your northernmost region a real pick-me-up, like the star atop the Christmas tree or a new fringe, but without the commitment and the blow-drying.
I used to be a hat hater, or at least indifferent to the variety of head options available to me. I had a faithful Bruta pink cap for summer and a Wool and the Gang woolly hat for winter, both loyal and practical accessories. But since I’ve accepted hats into my life, I’ve discovered a whole world of chic winter bucket hats, beanies and berets to brighten up the dark days.
The purchase of a great hat is also easy to justify because, like an expensive coat, you can wear it every day. Click through for 20 hats, from high fashion to high street, each with a personality of its own. Disclaimer: The balaclava isn’t for everyone but if you like a warm face (or to travel around east London incognito), you might be keen to give it a whirl.

The Winter Bucket Hat
There is nothing chicer than the Prada bucket hat to head out to the pub on a Friday night with and it protects your hair from the rain. You could go crazy with the neon pink or neon green version, or opt for a classic rain hat (as your nan might refer to it). We love the Zara leopard print number.

The Beret
Eternally chic, the beret never dies and we’re coveting all the styles from model Edie Campbell’s brand, Itchy Scratchy Patchy. Who knew the beret's Scottish corduroy cousin – the tam o' shanter – could look so great?

The Faux Fur
We love the soft furry hat trend. From sheepskin to fleece to faux fur, it's a cosy embrace for your cranium.

The Chunky Beanie
If you’re feeling traditionalist and want a little update on the old woolly hat, go for a slightly chunkier option. You also can’t go wrong with a cute pom-pom.

The Balaclava
Spotted on A$AP Rocky and New York girl about town Coco Baudelle, the balaclava is the most daring of hat trends to be seen in. Calvin Klein and Gucci reignited this trend on the catwalk but the high street has some great options on offer. Go for a jolly knitted one in pastels to avoid being mistaken for a burglar.
